Are you ready for a fresh start?
Whether it’s a new year, a new season, or simply a desire to reset, taking time to pause and reflect is the first step toward realigning your life. Studies show that reflecting on your experiences can help you grow and improve more effectively than simply moving forward without pause. By looking back, taking stock, and planning ahead, you can thrive in any season.
Read on for five steps to realign your life at any time of year. This process is based on my Thrive R.E.C.A.P.™ framework, introduced in my book Time to Thrive: A Busy Woman’s Devotional Journal. Each step—Reflect, Evaluate, Celebrate, Anticipate, and Plan—is designed to help you pause, reset, and move forward with clarity and purpose.
Here’s how you can use these steps to get a fresh start today:
1. Reflect: Look Back on Your Journey
Reflection is the foundation of growth. By looking back on where you’ve been, you can identify patterns, lessons, and moments of gratitude that shape your next steps. Reflection also deepens your faith, reminding you of God’s presence through challenges and victories.
I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.
~ Psalm 77:11-12 (NIV)
Try This:
- Journal about defining moments from the past season. What did you learn about yourself?
- Create a timeline of recent events to spot themes or patterns.
Practical Tip:
Set aside 30 minutes for quiet reflection. Write down your key takeaways and how they’ve shaped you.
2. Evaluate: Take Stock of Your Life
Take a close look at your current situation. What’s thriving, and what could use more attention? Evaluating your life helps you identify areas for improvement and align your actions with your values.
Try This:
- Use a tool like the Wheel of Life to rate your satisfaction in key areas (e.g., career, health, relationships).
- Reflect with questions: Where am I thriving? What feels out of sync? How does my life align with my goals?
Practical Tip:
Choose one area to focus on and write down a small, actionable step to create positive change—like setting a date for self-care or reconnecting with a loved one.
3. Celebrate: Honor Your Wins
Celebration isn’t just about big milestones; it’s about acknowledging progress in all forms. Recognizing your achievements fosters gratitude and builds confidence for future growth.
Try This:
- Write a gratitude list of recent accomplishments.
- Celebrate creatively: treat yourself, host a gratitude dinner, or create a success board.
Practical Tip:
Share your wins with a trusted friend or journal about them to deepen your sense of gratitude.
4. Anticipate: Envision Your Future
Dreaming about the future helps you set intentional goals and align with your purpose. Envision what thriving looks like in different areas of your life and let that vision guide you forward.
Try This:
- Visualize your life thriving in specific areas (e.g., career, health, relationships).
- Create a vision board or write a list of hopes for the next chapter.
Practical Tip:
Write down your vision in 2–3 sentences. Use this as a guide for the steps you’ll take.
5. Plan: Turn Vision into Action
A vision without action is just a dream. Planning bridges the gap between inspiration and implementation, ensuring that your goals become reality. Break your vision into tangible, actionable steps.
Try This:
- Set SMART goals (Specific, Meaningful, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound).
- Use a planner or app to organize tasks and track progress.
Practical Tip:
Identify one immediate action you can take today to move closer to your goal.
